Up until he buys an old truck, Elijah Morgan lives life according to his family's plan, never feeling like he belongs. Desperate to find his own path, he heads out on the open road, only to end up stranded in Nebraska. Not wanting to ask for his parents' help, he takes a job with tough, independent farmer Chase McKenzie.

Despite their age gap, the attraction between Chase and Elijah soon becomes undeniable. They give in to their desire, but that night changes everything and threatens the secret Chase guards so carefully. As the summer heats up, so does their relationship. When autumn arrives, Elijah is due back at college, and he'll have to choose whether to continue his education and follow in his family's footsteps or to stay in Nebraska with the man he loves.

Chase the Storm (Audible Audio Edition) V M Waitt Hugh Bradley Dreamspinner Press LLC Books

This is a full length novel of brown haired college student, 19 yr. old Elijah, who breaks free for the summer, venturing off on his own and finding his life. Blonde and older, Chase owns a farm in Nebraska, where he trains and sells horses, grows wheat, and bails hay. It's non-stop hard work, day after day, grueling yet satisfying. Chase is continuing to mourn the loss of his husband, Owen, and fights his growing feelings for Elijah. We get vivid depictions of Chase riding all out while the tornado approaches, with wild wind, hail, lightening, all getting closer. You can nearly smell the farm, wheat, horses, and country air. Amazing writing !
This story reminds me of the great Garth Brooks song - That Summer - where the young guy finds sex and life in the arms of the older woman he works for. Here, it's first time kisses, touches, and sex for closeted-at-home Elijah. I was really mad at Chase for being so moody and aiming his moodiness at Elijah. He needed to get his attitude adjusted earlier. He's a grown up, and needed to stop laying his crabbiness at hard working Elijah. Finally he starts coming out of his pent up emotions, comes to his senses, and Elijah deserves his "whole" self, not just pieces. They travel to the Auction and have a wonderful time, things change, plus the openness they get to claim followed them home. A bittersweet, a heartbreaking, an excruciating return to college. Have your tissues ready my darlings !
This magnificent story has a happy ending, and will bring you completely to your knees.
Highly recommended. ENJOY !!

Chase the Storm (Audible Audio Edition) V M Waitt Hugh Bradley Dreamspinner Press LLC Books Reviews

Both my feelings and the character's.

I loved this story, but it's got me feeling a certain way, and I just can't express it.

I will definitely be looking for more by this author.
So Chase and Elijah are hot together. The sexual tension is really grand - marred slightly by the constant back and forth of Chase's angst. I thought his grief was probably realistic - because I've seen people who are grieving go to anger quite frequently as a reaction -- often with those they are closest too. It had a very authentic ring to it. Elijah's patience seemed a bit uncharacteristic of his age - but then again he was well portrayed as a boy on the cusp of manhood - but with a older soul almost.

The setting was wonderful if idyllic (unlikely in the middle of Nebraska that everyone would be cool with gay marriage...but I could be wrong) and I absolutely adored the way the ranch/farm played into things. For once there is MORE than horses and cattle. And having grown up on a farm and being intimately familiar with harvest and such that rang absolutely true.

These two worked like dogs in every way possible from day to day to their happily ever after. I'd of liked to see how Elijah's parents took everything and what happened after - though I rarely ask this one needs just a short story of about 45 pages because it is so deserving of a "10 years later" update!
How did I miss this one along the way?

There is a chapter in this book which will take your breath away on virtually every page as it encompasses all the mystery and desire and conflict that early 30-ish Nebraska farmer Chase McKenzie and 19-year-old trust fund New Yorker Elijah Morgan bring to us before and after you get to this crucial section.

Before and after this chapter you will be drawn into a relationship that is triggered by happenstance and catalyzed by grief, doubt, passion, and an equal portion of cold-hearted behavior and over-the-top sexual adventure.

The plot is life on the farm. The narrator, Elijah, is as confused and uncertain in the 2010's as his hero Holden Caulfield was in the 1950s. The object of his desire, Chase, is as broken and guilt-ridden as one can expect of a man who lost his husband so fast and tragically at such an early age.

You may cry along the way--I was close to it by held my breath, closed it out, and came back the next day maybe a half-dozen times. Each time I did I was astounded by how author Watt completely fooled me as to what she had prepared--and totally thrilled by how she handled it.

This is a major, major MM romance. It will stay with me for a long time.
I won't re-visit the earlier review, because it gave a good overview of the plot and characters, but I must say I really enjoyed this story and I actually shed some tears at the end, which in this jaded reader, is pretty unusual. I thought the author did a very good job of portraying grief and lost love plus the feeling of disconnectedness and alienation that youth sometimes brings without going overboard with the sap and gush. And the tropes of romance were kept to a minimum. There was plenty left to the imagination and that I really appreciated.

This is spare, well-crafted storytelling and the main characters are not too precious or subject to overwhelming epiphanies, which they then soliloquize at length for the reader. The author lets the characters show their feelings or not (however some may disagree with them) and speak for themselves. There were a few odd word choices that jangled, but I think the author was trying hard not to use some of the trite and overused words and phrases common to romances these days.

Chase the Storm was a refreshing and deeply felt read. I think the sex scenes were well-balanced with the relationship and romance. The realistic reactions of the characters seemed very true to life, if not wholly satisfying to some readers. They seemed like real guys struggling with unfamiliar, overwhelming and confusing emotions. Their reactions to situations felt very authentic. Recently I read a character in a romance explain (paraphrase) "we may be gay, but we're still guys and we don't do feelings all that well." If you read between the lines, the story comes shining through and for that, I highly recommend this book.

p.s. There is a way to figure out Chase's age--it just comes later in the book and takes a bit of calculating.
